Paul Revere’s long association with church bells started as a teenager when he was engaged to ring the bell at Old North Church in Boston. Later, as his business interests continued to grow, he began casting church bells in 1792.

Research by the Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunkport, Maine has identified 134 bells cast with the Revere name and 84 listed with the Revere Company stock books. Revere’s sons continued to cast bells after 1811 when their father was no longer associated with the process.

Of the 84 bells listed in the Revere Company’s books, the smallest was cast for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Newcastle, Maine in 1818 at 359 pounds. The largest on the list, weighing in at an impressive 2,488 pounds, was produced for the First Congregational Church, Unitarian in Providence, Rhode Island in 1816.

The Gloucester Meetinghouse’s Paul Revere bell was cast in 1806 and weighs 1,015 pounds.

The historic Revere bell is rung each Sunday before the 10:00 a.m. service. Pictured here is Lucille LePage who rang the bell each Sunday during her tenure as the Church’s Sexton.
